Next New

There are many forms of new media in the world today. One of the more popular forms of New media is Virtual Reality. VR is mainly used through video games that put you in the world of that game simulating a real game feel. A lot of people always want to go this or visit this, but either cant due to certain reasons or just dont have the time. That is what a new form of VR can due. VR is mainly simulations. These simulations can range from going to concerts and sporting events to climbing Mount Everest. The range of possibilities is unlimited. This form of media can help people accomplish dreams of theirs without really even doing it. It can also create happiness for people.

Wiki so far

As of right now I haven't contributed to the class wiki, but I plan to contribute within the next week. The research I have been doing is related to the topic of my term paper which was about whether or not social media is good or bad for our health. I just want people to know the consequences or even the benefits of social media on our health. Most people just use social media for simple purposes. Reading tweets or looking at images posted by friends, family, or celebrities we may follow on the several social media sites that exist. Health is the number one thing in life. We should always take care of it and should know what can make it better and what could make it worse.

P2P

File sharing is a common thing I feel is in the workforce. People within a company work together and sometimes need to know the same information. File sharing is the ability to transmit files from one computer to another through either a network or the internet. Besides the basic file sharing there is also P2P. P2P is peer to peer file sharing. P2P is the form of sharing and distributing digital media through peer to peer network sharing. In the article "Peers Find Less Pressure Borrowing From Each Other" by Wendy Kaufman talks about a from of P2P. In the article Kaufman talks about a woman who cant get a loan for her credit card debt and even if she could the interest rates were very high. Instead of going to a bank she used Lending Club which helped her get a loan at a reasonable rate of  6%. Instead of bank helping her out, her peers did instead. Another example of P2P is Gnutella.  Gnutella allows connecting to the network and sending out a request for a file the individual wants to download.

Advice

In college we as students learn many different things. From the most basic english class to a 4000 level math course. With all these different class there is going to be a lot of work involving a lot of different information. When we need help with questions when at home we usually resort to our notes and textbooks for help. If those dont help we go online and search the questions in hope that there is some place that contains the question with a detailed answer to that question. The most popular sites for this is Chegg Study and Coursehero. While these websites are helpful the only issue with them are that we must pay to see the answers we need. What I believe Baruch College should do is create a free site similar to Chegg and Coursehero with all questions answered by Baruch Professors. This would be great for students because it is free and we would know that the answers we are getting are from professionals and will be right. This can improve grades and even help professors know what topics people are struggling in.

Privacy

Today we are in a world where as of right now new media and other forms are at its peak. With that the topics of privacy and confidentiality have also emerged. There is a lot of rumors about how the government is watching us and is invading our 4th amendment right to privacy. This is somewhat true. After 9/11 the government passed a law called "The Patriot Act". This actually allowed the government to listen in to calls, track internet searches, and look and text messages. This was used for anti-terrorism. Besides that we can control our privacy and confidentiality on our own through our ways of new media. Majority of the forms of new media have settings where you can control privacy. For example with sites like Twitter and Instagram you either make your account private or public. If it is public anybody can see your profile. If it is private people need to request to follow you to see your profile. But even with all this people can hack into anything they can think of. Issues involving privacy and confidentiality can be prevented, but in reality it can never be stopped from violating.

Creativity and New Media

What I did for this blog was create a Memoji. I did my best to create myself in the IOS software of an Apple iphone. These memojis are very cool and fun to do within any form of a conversation through text message. With your memoji once you create a model of yourself you can send different expressions of standard emojis, but with your face. Not only is it you, but you can send the standard emojis given, but create expressions out of them as well. Also, with your memoji you can send animoji. This when you record yourself through these memojis. It is fun way to use new media to foster creativity. It makes text conversations quite funny.

HW Creativity

In the article "1+1+1=1" by Sasha Frere-Jones gives a perfect example of how media fosters creativity. In the article it talks about a DJ that is creating mashups of different songs. This DJ found different songs that either have the same tempo, same instrumental, and same genre. Because of this the DJ created songs that had a good flow to them. Any form of media can foster any form of creativity. An example can be Do it yourself (DIY) project. People can watch and/or see different things that will inspire them to do the same things or some variation of what has been done. Somebody can be watching a Youtube video of something being built and that person can now want to do the same thing. Because of that media platform it inspired some form of Creativity. Others can do what the DJ did with different songs or others can even make short mashup movies.

Modeling Reality with Virtual Worlds

There is many different ways that virtual worlds can be used. In the virtual world there is good things and bad things about it. The biggest pro in my opinion is that it connects people. Yes, it connects people in virtual reality, but it can translate to a real-life connection between people. People meeting up in real life and can end up becoming friends. An example of this came from the article "I’ve Been in That Club, Just Not in Real Life" by Dave Itzoff. In this article it talks about "Virtual Lower East Side" aka VLES. The author talks about his experience from going to club in the Lower East Side to going to the same club just in this new virtual world. While in this virtual world he meet somebody and only a few days later they met each other at a cafe in real life. They would go on to talk about the similarities between VLES and real life interactions. An issue that can be really exposed is the idea of being fake. People enter these virtual world behind a computer screen and create an avatar that can be nothing like them. These people can create a character that is nothing like them and it can end up one of two ways. The fake character can turn into the real life person which can also be good or bad. The other is that it can lower a persons self worth and/or self-esteem and make the person feel like "Why cant I be like this"? Everything has a counter to it. The article "Naughty Auties  battle autism with virtual interaction" by Nicole Saidi it counters my con of self esteem being brought down. This article talks about people with autism using it to help. People with autism sometimes have issues adjusting to society and its norms. Virtual Worlds help them with the adjustment to any real life situation. The way virtual worlds foster creativity is through the world that is made. Is the virtual world accurate to real life or a world of imagination. I think future virtual world wills look the way the world looks at that time. It can also be a world of imagination and a possible prediction of what the world can eventually look like.

Blog: Social networking sites

The four social networking sites that I visited were Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Youtube. All four social networking sites have different look when you first go on them. They all have an inviting feel to them. Once you go on them you want to continue going through them to see what else you can find and do. They all have different approaches. Twitter and Facebook are similar in the way that they both have a nice blue color to them. Also, it has people writing them and posting pictures. They are all ways of communication between all people. Instagram is different in the way that it is mainly pictures and short stories that people can see. Youtube out off all the sites takes an approach that is less words and more visual. Youtube is sort of face to face interactions. For jobs for example of a person who is hiring can post a video explaining the company and what the job opening is. Sometimes it is better for a video to be posted with the person actually saying something rather than just words. Facebook and Twitter is similar and it can also do both. All sites have ways to interacting with people and can be informative.

Blog about Twitter

Twitter discussions, blackboard discussions, and in-class discussions are all different in their own ways. Twitter and blackboard discussions are similar in the fact that they are internet discussions that people that follow you or are in your class can see and comment on. I feel that the main difference between the two is how much can be said. On Twitter we are limited to a character count. So, for us to express an opinion or summarize an article we have to be short, simple, and to the point. For blackboard discussions on the other hand have no character limit. We can write as much as we want and will be able to get a point across in a single post. To make a point on Twitter can be for example 3 posts and may lose its feel because of that.

When it comes to Twitter discussions and in-class discussions they relate on the fact that it is constant back and forth on opinions or ideas or whatever the topic may be. Twitter has notifications if a comment is made on your post and you can respond and keep going. It is similar to a in-class discussions if there is agreements or counters on a response. But, in an in-class discussions they are immediate with no breaks in between comments. In-class is face to face and not behind a screen where maybe you look up things to further prove your point.

Blog Social Networking

Some ways social networking can used whether it is corporate or anything else is to put something out there for everybody can see. These things can be a product, an opinion, job hunting/searching or maybe an idea that just needs a following to get going. The main things in my opinion are product placement/advertisement and job hunting/searching. In an article “Social Networking Technology Boosts Job Recruiting” by Frank Langfitt he talks about how great social networking technology is great for recruting and mentions Linkedin. Langfitt also supports his claim with an example showing a recruiter searching people to fit a job position and found a person on Linkedin that fit the position perfectly. With this form of technology it makes it easier for companies to find and hire people that they feel is best for them. There is a “dark side” to social networking. This “dark side” can come from products. In an article “How to Build a Community on Social Media” by Sara Lavenduski mentions a small company getting recognition on several social media sites. While the CEO is happy with being noticed, he does realize that he isnt up there with the big companies. That is where the “dark side” occurs. Social networking gets you recognized, but you can easily be looked over or even worse have your product copied. As you can see recruting and product advertisement are just a couple of benefits of social networking.

Blog vs Wiki

Blogs and Wikis are part of a new wave of new media. They are just another way for people to communicate with each other on the internet. They are also another way for people to write things on the internet for everybody to see. Blogs and wikis are similar in the sense that they are applications where people can collaborate and put information/opinions on the internet. They are different in the way it is used. Blogs are run by at most a few people per blog. The only people that write the blogs is the people who created it. The issue with this is they control what is written and sometimes it is not good things. An example of this is from the New York Times paper called "Stung by the Perfect Sting" by Maureen Dowd. The article brings up model Liskula Cohen who was cyber-bullied through an unknown blog. This blog called her names that were insensitive. The problem with blogs is that people can hide behind them while making fun of people. Wikis on the other hand, anybody can edit the info. Blogs=opinions and Wikis=Information. In the article "Wikipedia Will Limit Changes to Articles on People" by Noam Cohen it talks about limiting change on articles. Wikipedia has had history of having somewhat faulty info due to that anybody can edit the articles. Part of it is so people are protected from having the wrong this said about them. Blogs can be used for any collaboration, but there need to be limits on what is said. Any blog website should process the blog before being published to see if it is acceptable. One thing wikis can do is maybe team up with the people wikis are about to get the right information.

Social Media: Good or Bad for our Health

For my project I chose to do it on Social Media: Good or Bad for our Health. Health is such a huge topic in today's world. Heath is both physical and mental and I will be discussing both aspects while talking about the positives and negatives. I believe that a persons health should be the number 1 priority in life. Other may say it is happiness or money. In reality both things correlate with social media and your Health. This will be talked about in my project. People will use social media so it can help them with things like exercise and others will use it so they can see other people and what their lives are like. Social Media when it was originally created such as Facebook was for the simple purpose of connecting with friends and family. Today in 2019 its use has completely changed. People using for exercise can be the good and others using it for looking at other peoples lives. Health isn't just the physical, it is mental as well and the positives and negatives of this will be discussed further in this project.
